The little mermaid story

The statue was erected on Langelinie on 23 August 1913. So it has been standing there for more than 100 years. The statue was a gift from brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. It is made of bronze and granite stone – and the young mermaid sits beautifully on a raised stone at the water’s edge.

As most people know, the sculpture is inspired by HC Andersen’s tale of the mermaid who sacrifices her life at sea to be reunited with her prince on land. It is because of this world-famous adventure that the statue has also become known throughout the world and is well visited by tourists daily. It has even been lent to China, which can not get enough of the Danish adventure at all!

The Little Mermaid on Langelinie is a must when you are in Copenhagen! The area around the statue offers many opportunities for a cozy day. You can enjoy a wonderful summer day with walks along the water or in Langelinie park. Or move towards the city and find a great place to enjoy a lunch after you have captivated the beautiful statue long enough.
